It’s the early 2010s. Five friends in Wigtownshire prepare to take flight. Some spread their wings, some stay behind. As life moves forward and everything changes, the question remains—can their friendship survive the winds of time?

Butterflies is an intimate coming-of-age story - a ‘micro-musical’, set in a big world. It’s about those fleeting, delicate moments of youth we remember for ever and hazy summer nights linger long in the memory.

The musical inspiration is Zoë Bestel’s 2014 debut album Sir Lucas and the Moon, along with earlier and later singles 35 Missed Calls (2012) and Utopia (2022). Prenton has created an original story to this Bestel ‘juke box’ work, with musical theatre arrangements and musical direction by Bethany Tennick. Inspired by Bestel’s early teenage life in rural Dumfries and work from this acclaimed first album, Butterflies highlights her gift for lyrical storytelling with soulful melodies that feels personal yet universally resonant.
